Olana
Named
for a fortress treasure-house in ancient Persia, it can
be described as nothing short of breathtaking. Olana is
situated on 250 acres of picturesque grounds over
looking the Hudson River Valley. Built by Frederick
Church, one of America's most important landscape artist
Clermont Estate
Clermont
was the Hudson River seat of the politically and
socially prominent Livingston family of New York for
more than 230 years. Seven successive generations of the
family left their imprint on the architecture, room
interiors, and landscape at Clermont. Today the 500 acre
historic site appears much as it did in the early
twentieth century, when the estate was the home of the
last two generations to occupy the property: Mr. and
Mrs. John Henry Livingston and their daughters, Honoria
and Janet.
Wilderstein
The
history of Wilderstein begins in 1852 with Thomas Holy
Suckley's purchase of the river front site, then a sheep
meadow of the adjacent late 18th-century estate,
Wildercliff. Suckley's fortune had been secured
through the family export trade and real estate
investments. He was a descendant of the Beekman and
Livingston families whose estate houses were prominent
landmarks in this region of the Hudson River Valley from
the 17th through the late 19th centuries.
Staatsburgh
Staatsburgh,
is a New York State Historic Site located within the
boundaries of Mills-Norrie State Park. It is an elegant
example of the great estates built by America's
financial and industrial leaders during the Gilded Age.
A 25-room Greek Revival structure was built on the site
in 1832 by Morgan Lewis and his wife, Gertrude
Livingston, replacing an earlier house that had burned
down. This second house was inherited by Ruth Livingston
Mills, wife of noted financier and philanthropist Ogden
Mills.
Locust Grove
Overlooking
the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, NY, the 180-acre
estate of Samuel F. B. Morse includes an Italianate
villa designed by Alexander Jackson Davis containing
extensive collections of American and European
decorative and fine arts. Three miles of carriage roads
wind through landscaped grounds, romantic gardens and
shady groves. |
